Yes, there are many people who walk around Toronto’s Financial District in suits, but we’re talking about the USA network show Suits. Currently airing its sixth season, the show is about about the incredibly smart Mike Ross who works as Harvey Specter’s law associate, despite having never gone to law school; it follows the two of them as they handle cases while keeping Mike’s secret safe. The show is set in New York City at a big downtown law firm, but in reality it’s mostly filmed in our own neighbourhood, Toronto’s Financial District.
If you’ve seen Suits you have definitely noticed MyTOFD in the background… if not, let us point them out for you! (Spoilers of season 1-5 ahead)
SEASON 5 EPISODE 15 – BAY ADELAIDE CENTRE
Bay Adelaide Centre plays Pearson Specter Litt in Suits; the law firm is ‘located’ on one of the floors in the building. Therefore, every now and then scenes take place outside or in the lobby of Bay Adelaide Centre. With floor to ceiling windows, high ceilings and marble walls, it is no wonder producers chose this building to play a top New York law-firm.
Here, we see Louis Litt (the Litt of Pearson Specter Litt) confront Harvey in the lobby of Bay Adelaide Centre. Louis wants to find out how Harvey is going to save Mike, who is currently on trial for fraud for practicing law without a degree, and suggests he turn himself in. Suffice it to say, the conversation gets heated.
SEASON 5 EPISODE 14 – KING AND BAY
This street looks familiar… that’s because it’s Bay Street; the main artery of Toronto’s Financial District. The scene is being filmed just south of the intersection of King St. and Bay St. First Canadian Place and TD Centre are very noticeable in the background of this shot.
Harold, an associate who began his law career at Pearson Specter Litt with Mike, approaches Mike on the street begging to testify for him during his trial. Harold wants to help Mike by falsely telling the jury that he remembers Mike from Harvard University.
SEASON 5 EPISODE 14 – ROYAL BANK PLAZA
Here Royal Bank Plaza is acting as a different law firm. Since Mike knows Harold won’t hold up on the stand, he approaches another ex-associate of Pearson Specter Litt – Jimmy- asking him if he will testify in Mike’s trial. They meet at the back of Royal Bank Plaza, where TD Centre can also be seen on the left. During the scene, when the camera turns to Jimmy, Union Station can be seen in the background. It is a great location as Royal Bank Plaza has a very unique architectural design.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 2 – RICHMOND-ADELAIDE CENTRE
A clear shot of Richmond-Adelaide Centre opens this scene. Earlier in the series, Mike leaves Pearson Specter Litt and gets into financial services because he’s worried about being caught for practicing law without a law degree. Mike approaches Harvey just outside this building to subpoena him during a company takeover battle they are on opposite sides of. But not before Richmond-Adelaide Centre is centre stage for the opening shot.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 2 – HY’S STEAKHOUSE
In the same episode, and coincidentally the same building, Mike and Harvey end up at Hy’s Steakhouse which is located in Richmond-Adelaide Centre. This scene is shot on the lounge side, as Mike is seen sipping beer at the bar.
The takeover battle has gone poorly, and Mike asks Harvey to meet to see if the two can agree on a settlement. The conversation turns sour for Mike, and Harvey walks out after delivering some sound advice, as always.
SEASON 1 EPISODE 7 – CLOUD GARDENS PARK
Throwing it back to an early episode in season 1, Mike Ross is racing to get to work on his bike zigzagging all through downtown New York (read: Toronto). This shot shows him flying by (hence the blurred Mike) the waterfall at Cloud Gardens Park, which is across the road from his office at Pearson Specter Litt (aka Bay Adelaide Centre). The scene ends with him parking his bike in the parkette between the two Bay Adelaide Centre buildings on Adelaide Street.
SEASON 5 EPISODE 13 – BAY STREET
Back to season 5 and back on Bay Street. In this scene we can see many familiar Toronto Financial District sights; there is a TTC bus in between the two actors, Old City Hall is seen glowing in the background, and Bay Adelaide Centre is just up at the traffic lights.
Harvey Specter approaches Anita Gibbs, the prosecutor for Mike’s fraud case, about some ‘shady’ lawyer tricks she is using to try and prove Mike is a fraud.
As Torontonians know, downtown Toronto is a very popular place for film makers. With its tall buildings and wide range of restaurants and unique parks, production companies like to use Toronto as the background for their projects. It’s great for the economy and it is pretty cool to be able to see your hometown on the big screen!
