Beginning in Spring 2018, a new PATH map and wayfinding system will be rolled out for Toronto’s PATH indoor pedestrian network. The system will include a new hard copy map, wall maps and signage that will replace the old PATH system across the network.
The goal of the new wayfinding system is to make it easier to use the PATH to get around for downtown workers, residents and tourists. More than 200,000 work in the area connected by the PATH each day, 30,000 residents live within a five minute walk of the network and there are six hotels and five subway stations directly connected indoors.
If the PATH were a mall, its 1200 retail locations would make it the largest in North America.

What’s new and improved with the new maps and signage?
Improvements made with the new wayfinding system will improve confidence for both new and existing users of the PATH network.
Different coloured lines show you continuous routes and branch routes. The continuous routes will allow you to move through the full network if you wish to. Branch routes will take you to one individual building or section of the PATH.
If a PATH user is trying to navigate through a longer stretch of the network, neighbourhood destination markers should help them continue in the right direction through multiple buildings. For example, if heading all the way south to the Waterfront, signage labelled “Waterfront” will quickly identify that they continuing south through the network.
Many users of the PATH may be using the network to get somewhere not directly connected to the network. Major landmarks such as the CN Tower and Jack Layton Ferry Terminal are now shown with pictographs along with the above-ground street grid in order to help PATH users get as close to their outdoor destinations as possible while staying indoors.
New maps are compliant with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and include improved and updated locations of stairs and alternate elevators or ramps for those who may need them to navigate the PATH. Colours on the new maps and signage provide the recommended 70% level of contrast for those who may be colour-blind.
How was the new map developed?
The Toronto Financial District BIA led the development of the new wayfinding system in partnership with the City of Toronto. This has been a multi-year process involving more than 100 stakeholders including PATH-connected buildings, City agencies, emergency services, accessibility experts and more than 1,900 responses from the public in an online survey.
Is there an app for the new PATH map?
Before a new digital map could be considered beneficial to users of the PATH network, it was determined that the previous base map would need to be revised. As part of the new PATH wayfinding strategy, a digital wayfinding strategy was prepared and provided to the City of Toronto, the manager of the PATH’s branding. The recommendations are primarily that unless the new PATH map is included where users already use mapping, it would not be very effective.
