Alongside the Love Art Fair Preview taking place in the First Canadian Place lobby, Jennifer Walton has taken up residence for the past week working on a beautiful oil painting which will be featured in her dark underwater swimming series.
“The opportunity to be an artist in residence working in the Financial District was a very intriguing idea,” said Jennifer Walton. “I wasn’t really sure what to expect, so I came in with an open mind.”
Walton helped to kick off the Love Art Preview with Wednesday evening’s very successful #GetYourArtOn party, hosted by Daryn Jones, and the Arts and Events team from First Canadian Place.
There has been a high volume of traffic visiting Walton during her residency this week. “It’s been very different being out of studio,” said Walton. “The lighting has been very different to work with in the lobby and it’s been very exciting to have so many interesting people asking about my paintings. They’ve been very responsive.”
Walton has been living in Toronto for the past 18 years and her work is inspired by outdoor activities. In many cases, her oil paintings feature her children, who are photographed to inspire her work. Walton uses a Fuji Finepix camera which gives her rough images with the information needed to start her paintings, but allow for inspiration to come throughout the process. The paintings are not true to the original photographs. “It’s a form of realism,” said Walton. “My paintings look like photographs from a distance to draw you in, but when you get close you can see all the detail in the paint.”
