INSTAGRAM SPOTLIGHT: @sakithranaweera

Toronto’s Financial District is one of the city’s most Instagram-worthy areas! With its soaring towers, bright lights and collection of unique architectural design, it’s no wonder the area is featured on so many Torontonian’s Instagram feeds. We caught up with @sakithranaweera, who used to work as our social media assistant in 2017 and still loves capturing the Financial District on his Instagram account.

Tell us about yourself:

Hey! I’m Sakith Ranaweera. I’m currently a Statistics student at York University. I picked up a camera a little under two years ago and have been a ‘photography geek’ ever since. Fun fact, I used to work for the Financial District BIA as a social media & photography assistant!

What inspired you to take photos in the Financial District?

The architecture within the Financial District is second to none! Having worked at the Financial District BIA previously, I found myself falling in love with the neighbourhood the more time I spent within it. There’s numerous spots where symmetry and leading lines coexist. The phrase ‘Let’s meet at Financial’ is thrown around affectionately among the photography community, as it’s widely known that there’s always a good photograph to be taken. Not to mention those classic TTC streetcars that zoom by giving way to the ‘perfect shot’.

Favourite place in the Financial District to shoot?

Brookfield Place comes to mind, I always find myself wandering down there when I hit a creative block. The expansive architecture along with the natural light beaming through during the day, I’m guilty of posting a few too many shots from Brookfield on the @mytofd Instagram during my time there!

What equipment do you use to take/edit your photos?

I currently shoot with a Canon T5 having previously shot with a Canon 6D Mark II. As for the lenses, my go to would be my 24-105mm f4 L II. I also use a Rokinon 14mm f2.8 for my wide-angle shots whilst my portraits are shot with my 50mm f1.8. All my editing is done in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop where necessary.

Any other Instagram accounts you suggest following that shoot in the Financial District?

Hard to pick! A couple that come to mind would be @legionxstudios, @giltamin, @lucancoutts, and @reesestdot
